Supporting UK Merchant Navy Seafarers and Their Families

Merchant Navy Fund Emergency Christmas Appeal

Many UK Merchant Navy veterans will feel alone and vulnerable this Christmas as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. We urgently need your support to provide these deserving ex-seafarers with a Lifeline of Support.

It’s the end of a very difficult and challenging year for many of us, but the impact of the pandemic has hit the seafaring community especially hard. And as we approach Christmas, the crisis is far from over.

Former seafarers are feeling anxious and alone.

As a direct result of the pandemic, many UK Merchant Navy veterans have been stuck at home or in care homes – unable to see friends and family due to social distancing rules or restrictions on travel. Many of the services or groups they usually rely on for support and companionship have been closed or curtailed due to coronavirus. They feel isolated, anxious and vulnerable to a virus that is a particular threat to the elderly.

Christmas can be a very lonely time.

Most of us will be trying to enjoy the festive period as best we can, but it’s a time when many older people feel even more isolated and lonely than usual. With the coronavirus crisis far from over, those feelings are only going to be amplified this Christmas. By providing much-needed help and companionship, your support today can make a world of difference at a very difficult and frightening time.

Please help us provide a Lifeline of Support this Christmas.

By supporting this year’s Merchant Navy Fund Christmas Appeal, you can help more ex-seafarers to have someone to talk to this Christmas – lifting their spirits and easing feelings of loneliness, anxiety and depression. Your support helps fund vital services like the Silver Line telephone friendship service, which has been a crucial lifeline to isolated veterans this year.

We need your support more than ever this Christmas.

The Merchant Navy Fund is a collaborative initiative set up by Seafarers UK and the Merchant Navy Welfare Board in 2012 to exclusively support UK Merchant Navy seafarers. During the pandemic, it’s no surprise that there has been a significant increase in demand for the support services you help fund. We don’t receive any government funding, so reaching out to isolated ex-seafarers is only possible thanks to the continued support of people like you.

The seafaring community need your support more than ever to help them through this crisis. Whatever help you can give this Christmas will be truly appreciated.
