What we do

Seafarers UK has been championing seafarers since 1917. We support seafarers throughout their seafaring career: from first considering a career at sea, to working at sea, managing relationships at home while adapting to a seagoing life, then coming ashore and during retirement.

We do this by giving grants to organisations and projects that make a real difference to people’s lives, across the Merchant Navy, Fishing Fleets, Royal Navy and Royal Marines. Our key aim is to provide sustainable funding and improve the quality of life for those in greatest need.

Last year, we awarded 53 grants totalling £2.2m to 43 maritime welfare charities. See our manifesto for seafarers, learn more about our impact in 2019 and read our latest publications.

Help for individuals

Seafarers UK works with expert delivery partners to provide support for individuals. We have compiled a list of organisations who provide help, information and advice for UK and overseas-based seafarers and their families, many of which are funded or part-funded by Seafarers UK.

Seafarers UK relies on donations and fundraising

to be able to carry on providing long-term aid. Without this, there simply wouldn’t be the level of support we are able to provide today and that last year gave hope and help to over 209,000 seafarers, their families, and those preparing to work or serve at sea when they needed it most.
