Seafarers UK - Merchant Navy - Opportunities to work at sea and maritime careers

Supporting the present

2017 is Seafarers UK’s Centenary Year. To mark this, the charity is fundraising under the theme of ‘Supporting Seafarers: Past, Present and Future’.

In representing the ‘present’, the charity is supporting an international port welfare project (see details below). It also aims to raise increased funds in support of its general welfare work for serving seafarers.

Supporting serving seafarers

Seafarers UK gives grants to organisations and projects that provide specialist welfare services to serving seafarers from the Merchant Navy, Royal Navy and Fishing Fleets. It does this in such areas as port welfare, advice, youth welfare, education and training.

A large number of those serving will be facing problems of very different kinds; long periods of separation from friends and family, extended periods of duty, fatigue, and working heavy machinery whilst being exposed to harsh weather. Such dangers and difficulties can lead to disability, depression, debt, relationship breakdown, homelessness or even death.

International Port Welfare Partnership – a Centenary project

The International Port Welfare Partnership project is designed to encourage the set-up of ‘Welfare Boards’, ensuring the well-being of seafarers is better supported when they come into port…

Help with accommodation for fishermen and Merchant Navy crews

_MG_9361In Stanley, in the Falkland Islands, ships and agents often have difficulty finding accommodation for fishermen and Merchant Navy crews. It is costly and sometimes none can be found at all. Seafarers UK therefore awarded Stanley Seamen’s Mission a capital grant of £3,212 to help refurbish their demountable building – previously used for storage or for staff on secondment – and will now assist many seafarers for some years to come.

2017 is a very special year for Seafarers UK, so why not make it the year you do something special too and help us to support projects like the Stanley Seaman’s Mission with a donation to our Serving Seafarers Centenary Appeal.
