The UK Maritime Growth Study was initiated by Seafarers UK Trustee (and former City of London Lord Mayor) Lord Jeffrey Mountevans. It reported in September 2015 and of the 18 main recommendations, nine related to skills and training.
Consequently Maritime UK, the industry’s promotional body, attracted new members – including Seafarers UK – and formed a ‘People & Skills’ Working Group to report to its main Board, chaired by David Dingle, CEO of Carnival UK.
At the request of Mr Dingle, our Director General Commodore Barry Bryant is chairing a Maritime UK Forum specifically looking at the vital area of ‘People and Skills’ awareness, including the promotion of careers and employment opportunities. This complements Seafarers UK’s own work coordinating Seafarers Awareness Week in June every year.
